The POCKET - Digital Sewing Pattern | Charlie Darwin

(DELUXE) extra pocket sewing pattern!

Ever feel like you don't have enough pockets?! Not enough places to put your doodads when you need your hands free? Make an extra pocket to wear with any outfit, and free up your hands for more important tasks like combing your grandpa's beard hair or walking with your gerbil on the beach at sunset. Make them in multiples, gift them to friends, and play around with infinite possibilities for embroidery designs!

✂️ This is a great scrap-buster project!

🦋 The Pocket design:

  • Inner pockets nestled inside to hold pens, credit cards, and cash securely
  • Adjustable button closure, to wear high on the waist or low on the hips
  • Customizable to your personal waist size
  • Cozy, soft, flat, and washable (no harsh zippers or buckles)
  • Perfect size for phone, keys, wallet, and even a small water bottle
  • Quick to sew

👖Fabric recommendation:

Woven, non-stretch (check out my plant-dyed linens!) + lightweight fusible interfacing.

Pre-wash and dry your fabric using the same care instructions/ machine settings that you will follow for the finished pocket.

🗝️ This design is based on historical European pockets of the 17-19th centuries.

Historically, pockets are a symbol of one's access to economic trade, privacy, craftsmanship, and style; they are a place to hide stolen and secret items, to transport currencies and love notes. The pocket has been handmade, secondhand, it has been borrowed and gifted. Throughout history, the pocket has been placed under petticoats, sewn into pants, placed on a rope around the shoulder, and sometimes nested within, as a secret heartbeat inside of an even larger pocket. To learn more about the history of pockets like these, I recommend the book The Pocket - by Barbara Burman & Ariane Fennetaux.

I felt the directions for the assembly were clear. I made my Canary top w- handkerchief linen which is perfect.

My only suggestion is to say you used a medium or length stitch instead of a number that is only useful if one has your sewing machine. I use a Singer Featherweight that was made in 1946 and the numbers are all different. I googled what your stitches meant in terms of length. I have sewn enough that I knew what stitch length would be good, but a beginner might be confused.

I'm making The Pocket next! Keep your patterns coming- please!! I would love to have the Isabella Tiger and The Ladybird as patterns!

I love the Pocket! Your pattern instructions were clear and easy to follow. I made a slight change, shortening Card Pocket A so that my credit cards wouldn't get lost in it.

I made this a couple of weeks ago and wanted to test it out before reviewing it. Now that I've worn it, I can't figure out how I got by without it. I planned to wear it while hiking, but I am wearing it all the time.

I think I made this just a bit too big for me and am wearing it on the smallest size, which means that the end of the belt kind of hangs down. I will add a third buttonhole so this won't happen.

When I make it again, I may eliminate the pen pockets and replace them with one for lip balm.

Thank you for the wonderful pattern.

The fit was perfect. I made the canary shirt. Loved the seam finishes and added a bit of gray to the collar. I will make it again in another color and weight for summer.

Someday I'd like to make one of your dresses. Probably the coat style because of its versatility. The pocket is next on my list to do. Looks so handy as I don't carry a purse.

I work outside gardening a lot and a pair of rustic bibs would work well for me. Utility being the objective. Absolutely love your style, story and way you flow through the world....following 🥰
