Sergers

I have just purchased my first patterns and fabric. I have never sewn my own clothing. You know how you go clothing shopping and have to try on 10 items to find one that fits right? My fear is I will put time and money into sewing something, and then it won't fit right or look good on me. However, now that I mostly wear dresses, I think it will be easier. The first thing I'm going to make for myself is a pair of pantaloons to go under my dresses. I bought fabrics for my daughters so they can each make a dress. We have good quality sewing machines, but I want to get a self threading serger so my daughters can eventually sell what they make. What sergers are the best, most beginner friendly? Our sewing machines are Pfaff and Babylock. What do you use Leah?

Hands-down buy an industrial JUKI, MOXX16 for wovens MOXX14 forknits, although you can just tie off the first thread straight stitch for knits on the MOXX16 too. nothing will be better and the price is totally worth it

You had me at β€œlinen wardrobe” & β€œbraless”

I’ve been wanting a capsule wardrobe for so long and I love linen and I am done with bras. I picked up several of your patterns and super excited imagining all the ways they could be embellished.

What serendipty! I was in my local fabric shop today -Ester's on Bainbridge Island, WA. I went to ask if they had the PDF printing set up yet. Mentioned that I had been inspired by Charlie Darwin Textiles and planned to order a pettern once the PDF printing was set up. Hughe surpise. She had just stocked Charlie Darwin printed patterns. I had no idea they were available in shops. So now I have my pattern. Hope this is in the right place as new comment and not on someone else's post.

Pattern Manipulation

My son is trans and wants to wear more boxy masculine fitting clothes, but his hips and butt give him away. Does anyone know how to manipulate patterns to camouflage those areas?

I haven't attempted this myself, but expect that reducing the curves (at the waist, or darts elsewhere) that patterns generally have when marked as 'women's' in opposition to 'men's' may help to a degree. That's assuming you're starting from a 'women's' pattern if it is still the better fit option for him. I think also that more masc pants tend to be worn from the hips rather than the waist and if this style is comfortable for him then adding straight-cut shirts in siffer (less clingy) fabric that hang loosly and past the crotch level may help in reducing the visibility of that area. The other thing you and he could consider is if you are comfortable using embellishments like cuffs, necklines and pockets (as Pat mentioned), or suitable patterned fabric in areas that draw the eye away from the midsection and hips. Not knowing your starting point or what you've tried already, none of these suggestions may be useful but I hope they are some help towards your son feeling more like himself in his clothing choices.

Getting Back Into Garment Sewing After Many Years

I’m a modern quilter and art quilter who’s been frustrated that I can’t find clothes in my style or that fit well. So, I’m just starting out on my revived garment sewing journey and looking forward to learning and sharing with all of you.

The picture is my self portrait.

If you sew clothes even 1/4 as cool as your quilts, you will have a really good wardrobe! Love the self portrait!

Intro

Hello all-

Newbie here as well as new to garment sewing. Have made one pair of elastic waist linen blend pants in a class and a simple sleeveless linen top out of a book called How to Sew Clothes. My inspiration for purchasing a sewing machine was looking at brands like Flax and Cut Loose and thinking I should be able to learn to sew similar. As a relatively accomplished knitter I am already into the me made thing.

Really resonate with the Charlie Darwin ethos. Plan to purchase a beginner friendly pattern soon. Local fabric store is going to launch PDF printing this month and will likely do it then.

I'm the same except not new to sewing. I wore out a Cut Loose Linen bias tank and am hoping to reproduce it. I've also had to replace some of my older FLAX blouse buttons that have broken. Some not so easy to match or find! Anyway, welcome and best wishes.

Loving the open feel here :)

One, I love the openness about the designing and sharing concept of hacking / creating is recognized by our designer, Leah. Have a good core, then the rest will follow on life, the design, the make, the ethos, the sense of things are real and alive.

Two, keep us wanting m...ore...

Three, to be continued :)

Cheers!

Best way to fix?

Hello, I’m working on the Ladybird pattern. I’m about to add the collar to the bodice and realized that the collar is about 1” too short. Or, the neckline is about 1” too long?

Not sure what would be the best way to fix it?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Looks really good. The collar is definitely the trickiest part for me. I had to rip out the whole collar on my first attempt of Finch -- the "muslin" version -- and cut new fabric to make a second one. I'm currently working on my first real Finch shirt in 100% linen.

WIP Progress Thread (Gypsy)

I'm going to keep track of my progress here. I plan on making the Gypsy dress with 2 different fabric, because why not start big? I haven't held a needle in years lol!

I'm not 100% sure I'll do the skirt tiers vs a circle.

I do NOT like darts! I did the 2 on the bodice and I'm stalling on the skirt.

Favorite linen sources?

Hi I'm new here! I just found Charlie Darwin and am still contemplating which pattern to make first. I've been sewing casually for about 20 years, although lately mostly just for pattern testing and Tauko make-and-shares. I have a trip this summer I'm starting to brainstorm for.

Do you all have a favorite place to buy linen fabric? For a long time I was buying from fabrics-store.com but their linens don't hold up great over time. I'm looking for a bargain and better quality if possible! TIA!
